3) In the late 1800's, British influence eliminated the island's notorious centuries-
old slave trade which had peaked at 50,000 a year. Trade in slaves and elephant ivory gave way to fishing, modest tourism, and spice plantations. Gone are the
rich sultans (originally from Omar), with their gold and harems that perhaps were defended by a 1700's Arab fort built atop an old Portuguese settlement. The altar
